House Keeping 5/16/17

What a clever title. I know I mentioned like two weeks ago that this was coming. I’m trying not to drop off the map again, and I should have something for you all by the end of the week, but that’s “trying” and “should” and we all know how that works out.

Part of the issue is me not really knowing how to approach some of the newer stuff I’ve got. I’ve got a lot of comics to cover and no real experience working with them, so I’m hitting stumbling blocks there. The bigger thing is that I’m back in school part time and trying to devote enough time to it that I don’t drop out again. Fun times that. Plus, of course, standard life stuff and work stress. Because class I’m not getting as many hours at work and that’s a whole ton of not good.

Long story short, I’m at a bit of a loss on what I’m doing but I’m going to try charging on anyway.

So, Words Again

As I continue my quest for a steady posting schedule I find myself failing again and again. I’ve spent the day reading the book I’m posting a review of and trying to get some things sorted out. That hasn’t been real successful, but hey, adulting isn’t really about succeeding in my experience so much as keeping going.

So yeah, review should be up tomorrow evening. Unless something terrible happens and I’m stuck home because of the weather or something, then it’ll probably be earlier. Either that or I’ll just post the spider dance gif with no other explanation.

I’m having a bit of trouble with this one for a few reasons, but it’ll all come out in the wash. Might have some stuff going on on another blog soon. Nothing big, just building a character for an upcoming game my group is going to run. It should be fun writing exercise though.

Postponement

Hey all. I’m going to be late with my review this week, it is still coming but it’s not going to drop until Friday or Saturday. It’s just kind of been a week and if I finished it now I’d be necessarily rough on the book and I don’t want to do that.

So that’s the bad news, the good news is that I’ve got some really cool books lined up for review in the next couple months. That’s more than kind of exciting, I think. I’m also going to be trying to post more, I’ve gone slack on that again.

You may get innundated with stuff about my garden in a couple weeks. I’ve restarted the beans and have some tomato and basil seeds going. Really looking forward to that.

But, yeah, I’ll have things to say in a couple days. See you all then.

So I Fell Off the World

Being gone since the first has not been intentional, as you all may have guessed. I’ve fallen into something of a weird place with reading where I’ve read several books and loads and loads of fanfic, and then just haven’t gotten around to wording about it. At least, I haven’t gotten around to wording about it online. I’m rather certain my roommates are tired of hearing about how fantastic that one fic is or how that novella could have done so much better if.

I’m going to work on fixing that, so you can all share in their torment.

Add on to that, I feel like I want to do a break down of the Fear Street Saga trilogy some time. Not another review mind, that would be a bit odd, just another going over going deeper into some of the issues I had with the books. Sort of a “I mentioned this but” thing.

Also, the Arcanium Unbounded review is still coming. So’s Christmas, but hey. My goal is to have that up within the week, so if I’m gone for another twenty days that’s what’s up.

Weekly Housekeeping

Right, so eight days later and still no review. It is coming, hold ups are largely due to a recent move and trying to get organized after that. I’m working on getting back in the swing of things and we should be up and back to business as usual some time this week.

I’m also still trying to figure out what I want to do for Halloween here. Maybe a couple horror story reviews or something to that effect. Let me know if you have any thoughts on it, the comments are always open.

Excuses Excuses

I haven’t been doing much reviews wise lately, have I? It’s mostly a case of not knowing where I’m going with this and then second guessing myself anytime I start a new review. I’m trying to get better with that. I know I’ve been saying that for something like three years now, but one of these days I’m going to get back into the swing of things.

I’ve got a couple books read that I just need to write the review for and a couple more that I need to get read but that I’m pretty excited for. There’s also a couple of guest posts coming up, those should be entertaining.

I’m considering maybe starting posting some bits of a story I’ve been working on. I don’t know if there would be any real interest, but I’m finding myself sort of starved for content and I do want to see if there’s any feedback on it. It’s pretty massively rambly and I think I’ve exhausted every way to refer to Slenderman without just saying his name, but I’m fond of it.

That’s about it for now. I should have a review up in a couple days and maybe something about one of the books I’ve gotten for review as well.

Let’s Talk About Batwoman

So, I’ve been putting off doing my Edge of Tomorrow Book Vs. Movie post for awhile now, it’s still in the works I’m just not sure where I’m going with it and want to pull it together a bit more before posting.  So, instead of that, let’s talk about Batwoman.  More than that even, let’s talk about the fact that DC/Andreyko/Bat-editorial has decided that Kate Kane needs to break up with her fiance Maggie Sawyer.

Having stopped getting my pull list for various reasons I’m obviously a little behind on this.  The back story, for those of you who don’t follow the comic, involves Maggie’s ex-husband suing for full custody of their daughter.  Despite knowing that Maggie is a lesbian, that being the reason he has primary custody in the first place, he’s found out that she’s dating and that Jamie has met Kate and that just isn’t OK with him.  So Maggie’s off fighting that while Kate is back in Gotham being the title character and feeling like Maggie would be better off without her or doesn’t want her, because Maggie is busy trying to keep her ability to see her daughter and doesn’t realize that her fiance’s relationship fears run this deep.  Kate cuts a deal with the homophobic ex-husband, he drops the suit and she’ll stay away from Maggie and the kid.  She doesn’t talk to Maggie about this or have the decency to break up with her to her face, no, she leaves a note and moves her stuff out.  The issue ends with vampire sex because reasons?

This is one of those things where I’m honestly not surprised that the fandom doesn’t seem to be saying much.  It isn’t that is doesn’t absolutely suck on a number of levels, it’s that it’s kind of expected.  There is no shock here.  For Future’s End, DC already said, “Hey Batwoman was turned into a vampire by her ex, Nocturna”, so unless they were going to have her ex from West Point be the villain, she was going to wind up breaking up with Maggie or they were going to kill Maggie off.

It’s also a really poor way of going about the break up and really does nothing to serve either of the characters.  Maggie’s set back to square one as far as custody is concerned, which in this case is almost a good thing, but she no longer has her apparently loving fiance to offer emotional support.  Kate went from doing just about everything she could to help to making a shitty deal, without talking to Maggie about it at all, and then leaving her seemingly out of nowhere.  This isn’t a solution.  It just tells Maggie’s ex that he can pull this again when she starts dating someone else.  It makes Kate look terribly childish and somewhat stupid, seriously, she can’t think that this is a permanent fix.  I’m now imagining Batwoman scaring off all of Maggie’s future dates, for her own good you see.

This is also where I admit, I’m finding myself not at all a fan of Andreyko’s writing.  I don’t know how much of this is editorial mandates and how much of it is him, and I’d heard good things about his previous work, but this is just bad.  I get that DC is going for dark and serious but this is just ridiculous and, as with before with fans already knowing this was coming, I think that there hasn’t been as much of an out cry on this one because people just don’t care any more.  They’ve taken a character with tons of potential and, like a lot of their other characters, just buried her in grimness and everything constantly getting worse and I think that people have become numb to that.  There isn’t a ray of hope or a safe home for Batwoman, so what does anything matter?

I’ll probably post more on this later, ways that I think they could have handled it better.  But I’m tired.

And this would be that NaNoWriMo post I mentioned way back when.  I admit I’m not going to make it this year, I’ve only got about a thousand words and a plot outline, but it’s more than I’ve managed any year before now.  I may even manage to get up to five thousand words by the end of next week, get a really good first few chapters and some character introduction stuff going on.  Maybe dip into the actual plot.

On the end of why I haven’t been NaNoWriMo-ing, reasons of choices and insane classes and a bricked computer, it goes on and on.  Mostly excuses.

But here’s where the post has a point dear readers.  I want to know about you guys’ experiences with NaNoWriMo, your successes and failures and what divided the two.  Sound off in the comments.

More posts coming soon.

I’ve mentioned being on another Slendy kick multiple times recently, so I thought I would mention that I ordered a copy of House of Leaves due to it being referenced a fair deal in the mythos.  It arrived yesterday, wrapped appropriately creepily in plain brown paper and listed only as being from “Family”.  Even if this wasn’t on purpose, I approve wholeheartedly.  I haven’t gotten far in yet and the beginning is a little on the slow side, but I am enjoying it so far.

In other news, I kind of completely wigged on that review and will be posting it as soon as it’s written.

So, I Got Nothing

I’m still on a Slender Man kick.   Ordered a copy of House of Leaves a couple of days ago to see what all it’s all about and to see how it stands up to other horror novels.  Kitten is currently sleeping on my shoulder, she seems pretty content there.  Review  going up Friday at the latest, I missed the last one because of work and Jonesy and general blocking out while writing the review.  Going to try a different book and see if I can get that one written easier.
